Gyotaku Japanese Fish Printing
Gyotaku is the traditional Japanese method of printing fish, a practice that dates to the mid-1800’s. This form of nature printing was used by fishermen to record their catches but has become a popular art form of its own.
In this class, we will use latex molds as our printing plates – not real fish!
There will be a variety of different fish molds to choose from, as well as other sea creatures such as starfish, seahorse, and seaweed. Students will learn about composition, color, and how to create a monoprint
using paint, Sumi ink and washi paper. All necessary tools and materials will be supplied by the instructor. You are welcome, and encouraged, to bring different types of cloth to print on - examples: muslin, cotton, silk, etc., tee-shirt, apron, etc.
